At Bayou South Animal Hospital in Lake Charles, LA, we treat animals like they’re our family because they are.  What makes our animal hospital unique is that we treat both small and large animals at the same location. Our team has years of experience offering comprehensive veterinary care to animals of all kinds in Lake Charles, LA, and the surrounding areas. From small animal care to specialized treatments for your bovine and equine companions, we will work with you to ensure your animals are happy and healthy. 

Services We Provide

  • Grooming and boarding – We provide boarding and grooming services for your dog or cat. Some of our grooming services include nail trimming, baths, shaving, and more. Our boarding services include daily meals, vet monitoring, playtime, and much more. Your pet will love it here!
  • Spaying and neutering – We provide spaying and neutering services for your new pets. Spaying and neutering can reduce levels of aggression in your pets as well as greatly reduce or eliminate many reproductive issues and diseases. Spaying and neutering also help reduce animal overpopulation.  
  • Vaccinations – Vaccinations are incredibly important for your pet’s health. Your pet should come in once a year to receive their rabies and other vaccinations as well as medications for heartworm. Our veterinarian will track your pet’s vaccinations and update them when necessary.
  • Dental care – Dental care is a priority for your pet. We deep clean your pet’s teeth and gums. We also examine your pet’s mouth to check for gum disease, rotten teeth, and any other dental issues.
  • Imaging services – We have an in-house x-ray machine to check for any broken bones or muscle tears as well as a radiology clinic to look for any issues involving your pet’s organs. 
  • Large animal services – Our bovine and equine services include hoof trims, teeth cleaning, castration, and vaccinations. Our building includes a full-service barn so we can treat large animals safely and effectively. We also treat pigs, sheep, and goats.

Learn Who We Are

  • Dr.
    Adam McMahan
    Owner/Veterinarian

    Dr. Adam McMahan, the owner of Bayou South Animal Hospital, grew up on a horse farm in Arkansas and attended the University of Arkansas for his undergraduate studies.  He then moved to Baton Rouge to attend Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine and graduated in May of 2016.  Dr. Adam’s primary interests in veterinary practice include orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, dermatology, and dentistry.  While not working, he enjoys spending time with his wife Kristin, their two children and their labrador retriever Brie.  His hobbies include hunting, fishing, and anything else outdoors!

  • Dr. Courtney Fontenot
    Veterinarian

    Dr. Courtney Fontenot is a graduate of Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine class of 2018 and is an alumna of McNeese State University where she earned her Bachelors in Agricultural Science. Dr. Fontenot is a full-time associate veterinarian at Bayou South Animal Hospital where she practices small animal medicine.  Dr. Fontenot grew up in DeRidder Louisiana and now resides with her husband Nick and fur baby Zoey in Ragley, Louisiana. During her spare time, she enjoys spending time with friends and family or reading the latest Nicholas Sparks novel.

    Duane Watkins
    Veterinarian

    Dr. Duane Watkins is a graduate of Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine class of 2019.  Dr. Watkins practices mixed animal veterinary medicine full time as an associate veterinarian at Bayou South.  He especially enjoys soft tissue surgery, dermatology, and food animal medicine.  Dr. Watkins is a native of Lake Arthur where he continues to reside with his wife, Morgan, and their dog, three cats, a tortoise, and a bearded dragon. Some of his hobbies include hunting and playing slow pitch co-ed softball.                                                    

  • Jana Kingrey
    Chiropractor

    I was born and raised in Southern California. I graduated from the University of Nevada-Reno with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Science and received a Doctor of Chiropractic Degree from Parker University in 2014. I am certified by the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association as an Animal Chiropractor. I moved to Louisiana when my husband and I opened our chiropractic clinic in Westlake. I joined the staff of Bayou South Animal Hospital in 2015 and have been tending to their patient's chiropractic needs since then. I enjoy spending quality time with my family, playing with my dogs, and riding my horses.
