Bayou South Animal Hospital is at the forefront of our community. We care about our clients and see the value in educating them on how to keep their pets happy and healthy all year long. Keeping pets in the best possible health can be a lot of work – it includes good nutrition, exercise, and of course a few visits to an established and credible veterinarian.
Our holistic approach to veterinary medicine is one of the reasons our practice has been successful. From equine to bovine and almost every other animal, we are the right vet for any pet.
Our varied methods and procedures allow us to offer a personalized approach to pet care. We strive to understand your pet's needs through the latest veterinary technology. At Bayou South Animal Hospital, we realize how important your pet is to your family. This is why we treat your pets with the utmost care and attention in every surgery, checkup, and procedure.
Our practice has a unique history. Founded by Dr. Ted Shope and Dr. Jay Carter, partners of Southern Veterinary Associates, Bayou South Animal Hospital was successfully opened as a second location in 1997. Eventually, it became its own entity with Dr. Shope as the sole owner. He continued to serve the Lake Charles, LA, community until he passed away in 2015.
In 2018 Dr. Ted Shope’s youngest daughter, Dr. Darby Shope, graduated from Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine and became owner and a mixed animal veterinarian at Bayou South. Bayou South continued to be a family-run business, until June of 2021. In June the Shopes’ made the family decision to sell Bayou South to local veterinarian Dr. Adam McMahan. Dr. Darby now practices veterinary medicine in Gainesville, Texas and Klancy Shope Leoanrd remains an office manager at Bayou South.
Dr. Adam McMahan was born and raised in Conway, Arkansas. He and his wife, Kristin, moved to Baton Rouge where Dr. McMahan attended Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine. Upon completing vet school in 2016, Dr. McMahan and Kristin have made Lake Charles their new home and have grown their family with the addition of two children. As current owner, Dr. McMahan is passionate about continuing to serve both the longtime loyal clients and newcomers to Bayou South.
